King George resident Jose Lopez Lopez, was arrested on multiple charges after crashing his car into a building and leading police on a brief chase before falling repeatedly while trying to flee on foot, according to the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office.
The trouble started around 11:20 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 15, when a deputy responded to reports of a hit-and-run at the Falmouth Shopping Center on Cambridge Street.
Investigators said a blue sedan driven by Lopez Lopez attempted to reverse from a parking spot but instead hit the building before speeding off. While the building was unharmed, deputies suspected a DUI driver was behind the wheel.
Minutes later, a second deputy spotted the vehicle near Warrenton and Quarles roads, and when he approached, Lopez Lopez tried to escape but accidentally reversed into a ditch.
The suspect then stumbled out of the car and attempted to run, but his drunken state got the better of him—he tumbled multiple times before officers caught up and handcuffed him after a brief struggle.
Deputies reported “an overwhelming odor of an alcoholic beverage” on the suspect’s breath., officials said. A search of his car revealed 15 empty beer bottles, and it was also determined that he did not have a driver’s license.
Lopez Lopez now faces several charges, including:
- Driving under the influence;
- Drinking while driving;
- Failure to maintain control of a vehicle;
- Reckless driving in a parking lot;
- Driving without a license;
- Obstruction of justice;
- Fleeing from law enforcement;
- Refusal to submit to a breath test.
He remains held without bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail.
